August 2, 2022 |President Uhuru Kenyatta awarded University Charter to Kaimosi Friends University(KAFU), formerly Kaimosi Friends University College, a constituent College of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) making it the first fully-fledged and currently the only University in Vihiga County.

The Charter was received by the Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Ogodo, M.J. Nandi and presiding Chair of Council Dr. Josephine Waudo at State Lodge Kakamega. They were accompanied by MMUST Chancellor Dr. Peter Muthoka, MMUST Council Chair Dr. Jane Mutua, MMUST Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo, and members of Kaimosi Friends University Management Board.

KAFU was awarded the charter alongside public university counterparts: Alupe University in Busia County, Tom Mboya University in Homa Bay County and Tharaka University in Tharaka Nithi County. Private universities which received charter are Lukenya University of Makueni, Zetech University of Kiambu, Kiriri Women's University of Science and Technology in Nairobi and East African University of Kajiado.

President Kenyatta, in his speech, challenged universities to change tack in the delivery of higher education in the country to cope with the market demands.

The President said the next phase in the development of the country’s institutions of higher learning should shift focus to university education that is more responsive to a dynamic global economy.

“This is because in an increasingly globalized employment and entrepreneurship landscape, our children are no longer merely competing with their fellow citizens here in Kenya but actually with learners from across the world,” the President said.

The acting Vice Chancellor said the Charter launches KAFU into the league of public universities that contribute to the globally competitive quality education, training, and research for sustainable development.

Kaimosi Friends University is cutting a niche in Health Sciences in response to these calls and in line with the vision of the founding missionaries who set up the first Nursing school and health facilities in western Kenya at Kaimosi. Already the University has launched four bachelors programmes in the school. These are: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Upgrading), Bachelor of Science Clinical Medicine, Surgery and Community Health (BSc-CMSCH) and Bachelor of Science in Optometry and Vision Sciences.

Celebrations greeted the award of Charter with a thanksgiving ceremony held on campus. It was graced by the University Council, Management, staff, students, parents and our stakeholders including the County Government of Vihiga, Tiriki Professionals and elders, MMUST, the Friends Church, local political leaders and community.
