The Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) – a socio-economic development outfit bringing together 14 counties – has scouted Kaimosi Friends University College as one of the possible hosts for its research and innovation centres of excellence.
LREB Universities Committee chaired by Maseno University Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Partnership, Research and Innovations Professor Joseph Chacha met our Principal Professor Ogodo M.J Nandi and were briefed on preparedness of the University College to host the centre.
The team which also had two members of the LREB secretariat visited KAFUCO on the LREB-Universities research rapid assessment.
It had a checklist against establishment in infrastructure (learning and research facilities), human resource, ongoing research projects, level of research funds attracted, postgraduate enrollment, outreach, as well as number of partnerships, linkages and collaborations.
KAFUCO is among 16 universities under assessment for the centers pillared around 10 themes on Health, Education, ICT, Tourism, Agriculture and Food Security, Finance and Commerce, Trade and Industrialization; Water, Environment and Climate Change, as well as Gender, Differently Abled Persons and Youth.
The assessment follows response to LREB calls by KAFUCO dons Dr Kelvin Omieno (ICT and Engineering) and Dr Remmy Shiundu (Gender, DAPs and Youth). The two made their presentations at the second annual LREB conference in Siaya last year to earn KAFUCO the recognition.
Prof Nandi called on the LREB-Universities Committee to consider young universities like KAFUCO in establishment of the centers as was of nurturing their research and innovation activities and spreading the fruits of the development bloc to all corners of the region.
